Barcelona: Last Day of the Ride.

2:15 am.
I'm awaken by a light rain falling on my face.
I immediately place its plastic cover on my sleeping bag.
The rain stops after 10 minutes.
As I start falling asleep again
I realize that the plastic cover
makes me sweat.
I take it off.

This circus happens again around 4:00 am.

At 5:15 as the rain starts for the third time
--this time much stronger--
Speed and I decide to go protect ourselves
under the tent of a beach cafe.
By the time we get there
we are very wet.

But the tent does not protect much from the rain.
Speed suggests that we
"take advantage of the situation and start pedalling."
I almost slap him.

He then finds two chairs
and we stay there, exhausted, until dawn.

6:30 am.
The rain has stopped, the sun is rising up
but some clouds hide it to us.

We dig a hole in the sand
and place our sleeping bags on the dry sand.

9:00 am.
Now it's too hot to sleep, we get up.

10:30 am.
I write all this in front of an empty tea cup.
Speed and I don't exchange a single word.

Plaza Real, old town, old port, Olympic port.

3:00 pm.
Sitting at a table of "La Terraza del Port"
I decide to end my part of the trip here
and take the train to Monaco.

We left Ibiza exactly one week ago.
I've had enough.

6:30 pm.
I'm in Barcelona Sants station
a ticket in my pocket
sitting on an organized bicycle
waiting for my train to leave.

Speed and I split about an hour ago.
He continues alone for a little while
as planned.

This week has been a singular experience
which ends strangely.
I think that our main mistake has been
to over-estimate ourselves.

I had planned to do 1100 kms in two weeks.
I did exactly half.
Next time I will ride less
and take more time
to discover the areas through which I pass.

The main problem was that sleeping under the stars
is not reliable enough if you have to do
a 80 kms ride the next day.

As I told Speed these mistakes do not matter.
What's important is that
we just created ourselves
something that we will remember
for the rest of our lives.
